Trelleborg Medical Solutions officially launched its first production facility in Costa Rica.

The factory is located in Grecia town, Alajuela Province, covering an area of 107,600 square feet. It offers liquid silicone rubber molding, dip coating processes, and the production and assembly services of thermoplastic components and devices for critical healthcare and medical applications. The facility includes clean rooms that meet the strict specific standards of the medical device manufacturing industry.

Supply chain continuity assurance

As Trelleborg's first production base in Central America, the plant will provide supply chain continuity assurance through the global production and distribution network, assisting key customers in achieving nearshore production arrangements.

"By completing component production and providing one-stop assembly services at a single base, we have reduced transportation costs and multi-supplier management costs for our clients, helping them enhance their competitiveness and profitability," said Linda Muroski, President of Terumo Medical Solutions. "We are building reliable solutions to assist our clients in delivering life-saving medical devices to patients worldwide."

The factory is located in the Evolution Free Trade Zone Industrial Park in Costa Rica, and its design reflects Trelleborg's commitment to responsible operations. The company is dedicated to achieving net zero emissions by the end of 2035.

Sustainable Design

Since the project's announcement, environmental considerations have been a core focus. From the early stages of construction, the factory has adopted eco-friendly materials and resource management initiatives, incorporating sustainable features such as roofs with reserved solar installation interfaces and water-saving landscape designs.

The medical division of Terumo stated that the Evolution Free Zone Industrial Park has direct access to the country's main highways and ports, and is close to Juan Santamaria International Airport. In addition, the factory is no more than a 30-minute drive from the major cities in western Costa Rica, making it convenient to recruit a large workforce with excellent technical skills and academic backgrounds.

The Trelleborg Medical Business Unit is located in Plymouth, Minnesota, USA, and has decades of experience in polymer materials and processing. It is a contract design and manufacturing service provider that offers a range of services to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in the medical device industry, including injection molding, extrusion, and rapid prototyping. The company is part of the Trelleborg Group, a global leader in engineered polymer solutions, with business operations in over 40 countries.
