TIPA Launches New Home Compostable Film to Enhance Packaging Performance
Special Committee for Degradable Plastics 2025-03-31 15:06:32

TIPA has launched a new home-compostable high-barrier film specifically designed for lamination in packaging of salty snacks and crisp foods, aimed at enhancing the functionality and durability of the packaging.

TIPA states that its 312MET Premium film is a lightweight and ultra-thin metallized solution with excellent high-barrier properties, effectively blocking salt, oil, and moisture. This feature eliminates the need for additional sealing layers, improving production conversion efficiency and making it suitable for various packaging applications.

This film is sold globally in roll form and can form one of the "thinnest" two-layer home compostable packaging solutions on the market when combined with cellulose or paper layers, making it especially suitable for packaging chips, fries, and various snacks.

TIPA also mentioned that this film is equally suitable for packaging granola bars, cereals, coffee, and tea. It extends product shelf life and maintains food freshness while adhering to the "eco-friendly" concept, achieving a sustainable product lifecycle.

Gary Tee, TIPA's Global Processing Vice President, noted, "Packaging potato chips in compostable material has been a tough nut to crack due to the chips' corrosive nature. By enhancing our high-barrier film, we're making significant progress in reducing plastic waste while offering snack brands and consumers a viable, thin, and high-performance sustainable packaging option."

As it happens, Mondi's thinnest barrier paper has been adopted by Welton, Bibby & Baron for premium packaging of fresh bread products. It is reported that this paper not only withstands higher filling weights but also effectively protects food from water vapor, grease, and moisture.

Recently, Parkside has also introduced a new range of lidding film solutions, including recyclable and compostable films specifically designed for food brands, packagers, and processors. Among the series, the Popflex product is the company's mono-polymer lidding film featuring laser-scored easy-open functionality. When heat-sealed with compatible PET trays, it facilitates recycling.
