BASF × Wacoal Use Elastollan® TPU to Create Thinner, More Durable, More Comfortable Bra Cups

June 4, 2026 – BASF has partnered with Wacoal, a renowned Japanese lingerie brand headquartered in Japan, to jointly develop bra cups for sports and casual apparel using Elastollan® TPU-based nonwoven fibers.
This material innovation aligns with Wacoal’s broader commitment to advancing bra cup technology, as exemplified by its proprietary “Melooop” technology. This technology uses a single-fiber material and employs melt-blowing to form a three-dimensional shape, thereby improving recyclability and reducing waste.
Wacoal Representative Director, President, and Chief Executive Officer Keisuke Kawanishi said: “At Wacoal, we support comfort during exercise and all-day confidence by designing sports bras. By using Elastollan® TPU material, we are able to enhance the bra cup’s responsiveness to movement while maintaining a lightweight, close-fitting wearing experience.”
Wacoal chooses Elastollan® TPU material to enhance the key performance of bra cup design and address common issues with traditional materials, such as deformation after repeated washing, poor breathability, and decreased durability over time. This material is lightweight, flexible, resistant to deformation, and has high mechanical strength, helping to improve comfort during exercise and extend the product's lifespan.

In addition, Elastollan® TPU offers greater design flexibility, enabling thinner, lower-profile structures without compromising structural integrity. This allows for more differentiated product designs that better meet consumers’ evolving needs.
Rohit Roop Ghosh, Senior Vice President of BASF and Head of Thermoplastic Polyurethane Business Management for the Asia Pacific region in the Performance Materials division, stated: “As sports continue to increasingly influence everyday fashion, advanced material solutions like Elastollan® TPU can deliver consistent mechanical performance under dynamic conditions, enhancing the design, comfort, and performance of sports apparel.”
