"China Construction" Gains International Fame! China's Construction Industry Further Upgrades During the 14th Five-Year Plan
On the 11th, the State Council Information Office held a series of themed press conferences on "High-Quality Completion of the 14th Five-Year Plan." Li Xiaolong, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, stated at the conference that during the 14th Five-Year Plan period, the industrial structure of China's construction industry will continue to deepen, construction technology will significantly improve, and overall strength will be noticeably enhanced.
Li Xiaolong stated that the construction industry is continuously developing and strengthening in China's modernization efforts, serving as a carrier of "Chinese construction" power. During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, the aim is to improve construction quality, with industrialization, digitization, and greening of the construction industry as the pathways. Efforts will be made to improve the engineering construction standard system, regulate the construction market order, and continuously promote the transformation and upgrading of the construction industry. This includes deepening industrial structure, significantly enhancing construction technology, and markedly strengthening overall capabilities.
Firstly, it strongly supports economic and social development. The construction industry is closely related to national economic development and the improvement of people's lives. Here is a set of data: in 2024, the construction industry's output value reached 32.7 trillion yuan, an increase of 6.3 trillion yuan from 2020, representing a growth of 24%. From 2021 to 2024, the construction industry completed a total of 15.4 billion square meters of buildings, 79,000 kilometers of municipal roads, 3,429 kilometers of urban rail transit, approximately 16,000 kilometers of railways, about 290,000 kilometers of highways, as well as various water conservation projects, airports, and other infrastructure. Additionally, the construction industry has supported numerous livelihood projects such as the renovation of urban villages, dilapidated houses, and old residential communities, significantly transforming urban and rural landscapes and improving the living conditions of the people.
Second, the new construction methods are accelerating progress. We are developing new construction methods such as intelligent construction, promoting digital design in engineering construction, automated production of components, and smart and refined management of construction sites. Focusing on the dual carbon target tasks, we are vigorously developing green building materials, green construction, and green buildings, and promoting the comprehensive implementation of mandatory energy-saving standards for buildings. We have completed energy-saving renovations of 800 million square meters of existing buildings, which can increase the indoor winter temperature by 3-5°C after renovation. The Hainan Boao Zero Carbon Demonstration Zone, jointly built with Hainan Province, has entered the near-zero carbon operation stage, becoming a window to showcase China's green and low-carbon development concepts, technologies, and practices to the world.
Thirdly, the "China Construction" brand is renowned overseas. Construction enterprises are actively participating in the high-quality co-construction of the "Belt and Road" initiative, accelerating their "going global" pace, with more diverse models and fields. From 2021 to 2024, the cumulative contract amount for overseas contracted projects exceeded 1 trillion USD, with a completed business revenue of 640 billion USD. By 2025, among the top 250 international contractors globally, there will be 76 from mainland China, including 4 in the top 10. A large number of overseas engineering projects, such as the China-Laos Railway, Peru's "Chancay Port," Côte d'Ivoire's "San Pedro" Stadium, and Bosnia and Herzegovina's "Doboj" Hospital, have been completed and put into use.
Li Xiaolong stated that the next step for the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development is to further deepen the reform of the construction industry, continuously stimulate the endogenous driving force for industry development, and promote the transformation, upgrading, and high-quality development of the construction industry. The goal is to create an upgraded version of "China Construction" and strive to provide high-quality building products for the entire society.
