PHA, bio-based biodegradable, spunbond nonwoven fabric

CJ Biomaterials is a subsidiary of CJ CheilJedang in South Korea and a major producer of polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) biopolymers. The company recently launched PHACT™ MA1350Q—a new PHA masterbatch specifically designed for short fiber and spunbond nonwoven applications. As a new member of the company's PHACT™ PHA product line, PHACT™ MA1350Q offers unique advantages in strength, softness, and stability, enhancing the performance of compostable nonwovens used in wet wipes, diapers, and hygiene products.

PHACT™ MA1350Q is composed of 45% CJ Biomaterials' amorphous PHA product (aPHA – PHACT™ A1000P) and 55% polylactic acid (PLA) by weight percentage. PHACT™ A1000P, developed by CJ Biomaterials, is a unique soft, rubber-like bio-based material that has received BPI's industrial composting certification and TÜV AUSTRIA's OK Compost HOME certification. When PHACT™ MA1350Q is mixed with PLA in different ratios for the production of spunbond nonwovens, it enhances softness, flexibility, and tensile strength compared to using PLA alone, thereby broadening the processing window and compostability of PLA-based nonwovens.

Jerri DiRenzo, Senior Director of Application Development at CJ Biomaterials, stated, "PHACT™ MA1350Q provides processors with a solution to precisely control the amount of amorphous PHA added, allowing them to customize formulations based on specific performance and composting requirements."

PHACT™ MA1350Q can be used directly or added during the processing of PLA-based non-woven fabrics and fibers. In addition to enhanced performance characteristics, this masterbatch also offers excellent sustainability features, including:

Composting is faster compared to using PLA alone.

● Obtained the BPI Industrial Compost Certification and TÜV AUSTRIA OK Compost HOME Certification

Safe, clean, non-toxic bio-based materials

● Will not produce persistent microplastics

Certified 100% bio-based carbon content sourced from renewable materials, which can reduce carbon footprint.
