Coats Launches T2T Sewing Thread Made From Industrial and Post-Consumer Waste, Offering the Same Strength, Durability, and Colorfastness
On October 9, Coats, a manufacturer of sewing threads and components for the apparel and footwear industry, announced the launch of its proof-of-concept textile-to-textile (T2T) sewing thread to enhance circularity.
These "proof of concept" threads come in two models, T2T Epic and T2T Gramax, made from textile waste using a chemical recycling process. They offer the same strength, durability, and color fastness as standard high-performance threads, and can switch on sewing machine production lines without downtime.

If used on a large scale, these innovative lines could help divert millions of garments from landfills each year.
“At Coats, circularity is no longer just a concept; it's a commitment,” said Adriana Morasco, Senior Vice President of Apparel Business. “Our textile-to-textile sewing threads demonstrate that sustainability and performance can go hand in hand. They are designed to seamlessly integrate into existing production lines, helping brands achieve their circularity goals faster.”
This marks a significant milestone in the textile industry driven by Coats' commitment to innovation. Coats' textile-to-textile sewing thread, developed by the company's sustainability hub in India, is made from industrial and post-consumer waste. This initiative is a crucial step in addressing textile waste, helping to divert it from landfills and repurpose it into the production of high-quality sewing thread, thereby reducing environmental impact and advancing the circular economy.

By 2026, Coats will increase the proportion of preferred raw materials to 60% from 31% in 2022 and 46% in 2024. This innovation helps brand partners accelerate their own material transition, making it possible for one of the most critical components of clothing, the sewing thread, to have circular content.
