Supply and demand costs: Modified PC/ABS Market Maintains Narrow Fluctuations

Plastmatch 2026-07-06 16:21:26

1. Cost side: Raw materials slightly eased, limited profit recovery.

The cost core of modified PC/ABS relies on the two major raw materials, PC and ABS. In early July, the benzene-styrene market operated weakly, leading to a slight decline in the spot price of ABS resin; upstream bisphenol A for PC saw fluctuations and adjustments, resulting in a slight reduction in overall costs on the raw material side.

On the one hand, processing additives, logistics, and labor costs remain elevated, while imported auxiliary materials used by foreign brands command high premiums, resulting in only a marginal decline in costs for high-end grades. On the other hand, domestic modified plastics production capacity is ample, and homogeneous competition among small and medium-sized modifiers is intense. Most of the profit margin created by falling raw material prices has been passed on downstream through price cuts and concessions, leaving only limited improvement in corporate profitability.

2. Off-season demand weighs on the market, with strong wait-and-see sentiment in procurement.

July is in the traditional off-season for the production and sales of home appliances and consumer electronics, with downstream factories mainly digesting previously built-up inventories, resulting in insufficient incremental procurement of modified PC/ABS. Although automotive lightweighting continues to advance, OEMs are controlling inventories and pushing down procurement prices, remaining cautious in their raw material purchasing.

Market transactions are concentrated in small-volume rigid-demand orders. Downstream processors are clearly inclined to push prices lower; only high-end flame-retardant and high-flow automotive-grade materials have bargaining power, while prices for general-purpose tradable materials remain under pressure.

III. Short-Term Outlook for the Market Later Today

Short-term modified PC/ABS market prices remain within a narrow fluctuation range.

Price divergence continues: Supply from major foreign manufacturers such as Covestro remains firm, with narrower quote fluctuations; domestically produced general-purpose materials from suppliers such as Zhuhai Senhong adjust flexibly with supply and demand, and the price gap between high-end and low-end products persists over the long term.

Cost guidance: If PC and ABS raw materials remain weak, domestic modified materials may edge down slightly; once raw materials rebound, major manufacturers will quickly follow with price increases.

Demand inflection point: After the autumn stock-up for the home appliance and automotive industries begins in August, market demand is expected to recover, potentially creating a window for a modest, phased boost in PC/ABS prices.

Overall, the current slight cost benefits are insufficient to offset the drag from off-season demand. The modified PC/ABS spot market is primarily focused on stable pricing operations. Downstream procurement is advised to replenish stock in batches based on actual needs, while continuously monitoring the recovery rhythm of upstream raw materials and terminal operations.
