Twenty Plus Enterprises Compete, Solid Electrolyte Industrialization Accelerates

DT New Materials 2026-03-15 13:57:18

In solid-state battery systems, the solid-state electrolyte is the core component of the solid-state battery.Soul and FoundationIn batteries, it plays a critical role in lithium-ion transport, physical separation of the cathode and anode, suppression of lithium dendrites, and ensuring electrochemical stability, directly determining the energy density, rate capability, safety, and cycle life of solid-state batteries, and is even more pivotal for solid-state batteries.Core Bottlenecks and Technical Competition Focuses in Commercialization Success or FailureWithout high-performance solid-state electrolytes, the industrialization and large-scale application of solid-state batteries cannot be realized.

Currently, the industry and academia have formed four mainstream technical routes for solid-state electrolytes, each with its own advantages and disadvantages, jointly driving the iterative development of solid-state battery technology.

I. Polymer/Composite Polymer Route

Polymer electrolytes exhibit good flexibility, are easy to process into films, and are highly compatible with existing lithium battery manufacturing processes. However, their ionic conductivity at room temperature is relatively low, and they typically require operation at elevated temperatures above 60°C. Consequently, current industrialization efforts primarily focus on composite polymer electrolytes, which enhance performance by incorporating nanofillers into the polymer matrix.

II. Oxide Route

Oxide electrolytes possess high ionic conductivity and good chemical stability, but their shortcomings are also very obvious. The material is hard and brittle, with a "hard-to-hard" solid-solid contact with the electrodes, resulting in high interfacial impedance. The forming and processing difficulties are extremely high. Typical representative materials include LLZO garnet structure and perovskite structure, among others.

III. Sulfides

The sulfide-based route is currently the class of solid-state electrolytes with the highest ionic conductivity, and its conductivity is closest to that of liquid electrolytes, making it the mainstream direction for commercialization. However, the biggest challenge of this route is its extreme sensitivity to moisture; upon contact with water, it generates highly toxic hydrogen sulfide gas, imposing extremely high standards on production environments and battery packaging technologies, thereby significantly increasing manufacturing costs.

IV. Halides

The halide route, as an emerging direction that has attracted significant attention in recent years, is often regarded as a compromise between sulfides and oxides. Its ionic conductivity is typically higher than that of oxides, while its stability against moisture in air and oxide cathode materials is markedly superior to that of sulfides. However, its chemical stability still requires validation, and its long-term comprehensive performance and cost advantages are still under further evaluation, making it a current research hotspot in both academia and industry.

Solid-state battery industrialization is accelerating, and the electrolyte industry is entering a period of intensive deployment. According to relevant institutions, as of 2025, more than 75 companies in China have entered the solid-state electrolyte sector, with planned total capacity exceeding 100,000 tons and already commissioned capacity reaching the 10,000-ton scale.
